Facebook, dannoso per per la salute?

Qualche giorno fa in un’intervista al Guardian Chamath Palihapitiya, ex dirigente Facebook, ha dichiarato: “Mi sento terribilmente in colpa per il mio lavoro con Facebook. I social media sono strumenti che stanno facendo a pezzi la società”.

Una dichiarazione che si unisce alle critiche che da tempo vengono ricevute dalla piattaforma, accusata di essere un veicolo di fake news, di odio e disinformazione.

Da Facebook è arrivato un post ufficiale in cui ammette che l’uso passivo del materiale pubblicato può “far sentire peggio” le persone.

La soluzione a questo problema, secondo l’azienda di Mark Zuckerberg, sarebbe però sulla piattaforma stessa: un uso più attivo potrebbe migliorare la situazione. Sono state messe in campo alcune contromisure per limitare gli effetti negativi di una lunga esposizione al social network, l’efficacia delle iniziative potrà però essere valutata solo sul medio-lungo periodo.

Nel post pubblicato da Facebook e siglato dal direttore della ricerca, David Ginsberg, vengono citati alcuni studi comportamentali che mettono in evidenza come la piattaforma (insieme a Twitter, Instagram e altri social network) possa avere un impatto sul benessere emotivo degli utenti, specialmente se giovani.

Chi passa troppo tempo su Facebook, cliccando link in quantità 4 volte superiore alla media o mettendo il doppio dei like rispetto al valore medio, può avvertire un maggior senso di malessere. Tra le attività definite “negative” ci sono il trascorrere tempo sulla piattaforma senza interagire con nessuno e il visitare profili altrui, che produce un effetto di “comparazione sociale negativa”.

Alcuni teorizzano anche che la rete allontani le persone dall’impegno sociale nella vita vera. Un altro studio citato prende in considerazione l’impatto degli smartphone sulle relazioni, ridefinite dall’iperconnettività, una condizione che ha portato al fenomeno del “sentirsi soli insieme” e all’aumento della depressione negli adolescenti.

“Agire attivamente con le persone, condividere messaggi, post, commenti con gli amici più cari e ricordi sulle passate interazioni, è collegato a un miglioramento del benessere”.

Questa affermazione è supportata da uno studio che suggerisce che gli studenti che sbirciano tra le proprie esperienze, riscontrano un miglioramento nella propria autostima rispetto a coloro che guardano quelli degli altri. Inoltre, lo stesso studio della Cornell University citato nel post ha tirato in ballo anche l’effetto “calmante” della piattaforma: gli studenti più stressati preferiscono andare su Facebook per rilassarsi.
